While the Nuclear Regulatory Commission has yet to issue a license for what will be the first nuclear reactor in more than 20 years, pre-construction work has begun at Southern Company's Plant Vogtle site in Georgia, with almost 1,200 workers on site laying the groundwork for a new era of new nuclear building. How will the construction industry meet the challenge to build more than 20 nuclear reactors in the U.S. in coming decades, especially as many nuclear skills and specialties have all but disappeared in the last several years. At least 3,500 workers will be needed for each of the new builds. We talk with the Shaw Group and others about how they are meeting this challenge here and in China and how new, pre-approved modular designs will alter the process of building nuclear plants.
