In this installment of our Milcon series, ENR looks at the billions of dollars worth of work being managed by the U.S. Navy as it realigns landside facilities globally to support new deployment of its sailors and equipment at sea. The Navy, which also manages Marine Corps construction, is now pushing to meet BRAC and stimulus spending deadlines in 2010, and has major U.S. facilities under way, from Bethesda Naval Hospital in Washington to Camp Pendleton in California, as well as overseas in Haiti, Guam and elsewhere. The story will explore this mission and the successes and challenges encountered to date.

Top Green Design Firms
ENR will gauge the level of activity in the sustainability movement, by ranking design firms based objectively on their revenue from projects registered with such third-party groups as the U.S. Green Building Council among others. This list, like our recently published “Top Green Contractors” list, has created a lot of buzz in the industry. It will draw the interest and attention of readers of all types with an interest in green.

In recent years, transportation agencies and builders have begun to accept design-build, CM-at-Risk, and other alternatives to traditional design-bid-build as integral “tools in the toolbox.” These tools are constantly being tweaked and improved upon across different modes of transportation. This ENR feature will examine best practices and options to date, including evolving efforts to build new infrastructure with methods such as performance payments, private activity bonds, public-private partnerships and congestion pricing. There may be experiences in one mode of transportation that could be applicable to another.
