March 1 Materials Due

In a University of Hong Kong study, researchers discovered that long hours, ambiguous project roles and limited chances to advance had bred a crop of dejected, cynical and drained engineers who were more likely to suffer illnesses and make mistakes on the job. As the U.S. construction industry works through its recession, what can be done to stop U.S. engineers from falling into the same funk? This ENR feature will suggest ways to keep engineers energized and optimistic, in a time of diminishing opportunity.

Innovative Buildings: Frank Gehry's Beekman Tower
The Frank Gehry-designed Beekman Tower, at 867 ft, will be the tallest residential building in NYC when it opens. The project has a signature-Gehry "swoopy" curtain wall that is a challenge to design and build. The tower was almost "cut" to half its size as a result of the recession. This ENR story explores the ways in which the project was rescued so that it could remain at its original planned height, and explores the complexities of its design and construction, including the curtain wall.

1st Quarter Cost Report
This report is one of the most popular of ENR's cost reports and has a long "shelf-life" as readers hold onto to it as a reference issue. It has historical indexes for ENR's Construction, Building, Labor and Materials cost indexes, a history of the construction and building cost indexes for all 20 cities, and explanation of the index methodology and how to properly use them, as well as an explanation of the methodology behind most other major industry indexes. In addition, the First Quarterly Cost Report will analyze current cost trends and how the deepening recession is affecting industry inflation.
