Forecast 2011
The cornerstone of the issue is McGraw-Hill Construction's forecast for new construction starts for 2011, broken down into major residential, nonresidential and non-building markets. The MHC forecast also looks at regional variations in the market. In addition, ENR's forecast issue includes other important construction market forecasts for 2011 from the U.S. Commerce Dept., Portland Cement Association, FMI Corp., National Association of Home Builders and ARTBA.
Mobile Workplace
Tools for mobilizing construction data are seeing a surge of advancement this year, and because construction teams succeed by collecting and sharing information quickly, accurately and completely, project teams with effective mobile data strategies are getting the most benefit as a result. Mobile data exchange capabilities are exploding, driven by a rapid expansion of broadband coverage and speed, by the introduction of new mobile devices that take advantage of that connectivity, and by the introduction of software and services tailored for construction that bring it all together, anywhere and everywhere. ENR looks at how the most advanced practitioners are taking advantage of it all. |

Business Management
Licensing & Ethics
The Gulf oil spill turned a spotlight on petroleum engineers who, unlike designers of highway overpasses and buildings, practice without licenses. What does this say about the engineering profession? To several members of the American Society of Civil Engineers, unlicensed practice is the Achilles heel of the profession. What are the legal and economic justifications for this multi-tiered system? ENR will talk to engineers, licensed and unlicensed, to find out.
In a sidebar story, the ability to engineer and build larger and more complex structures continues to grow, resulting in new ethical issues for the industry to grapple with. How are engineers and constructors weighing projects' environmental and societal impacts to a greater degree than just the traditional environmental impact statement (EIS)? What are the efforts under way to help them advise clients and governments whether such projects should be built at all? And how are these considerations being integrated into engineering and construction curricula in colleges and universities.
